Rant

It never ceases to amaze me how self-destructive we are as a species.

I recently had to tend to a lady in her 20s who was a mum to a few young children. She was in hospital as she was suffering from multi-organ failure as a result of Alcoholic Liver Disease, which naturally was a result of her excessive alcohol consumption. Despite the severity of her condition, she continued to drink, thinking that the world of modern medicine will always be able to bring her back from the brink of death.

But as most of us know, that is not always the truth. I worked hard on her for almost a couple of hours, involving the consultant on-call and the ITU folks, but it was too late for her and she died, not in the most peaceful of ways. You can have all the medicines and machines in the world, but you will die one fine day and barring some unfortunate event, you almost always have the option of ensuring that when the day Death comes knocking on your door, you won’t be kicking and screaming as you’re dragged to hell (or heaven).

It is increasingly difficult to find individuals who do not think beyond themselves in this day and age. I am almost conservative in some aspects e.g. when bemoaning the fate of our communities (and don’t get me started on the way the medical profession is changing. Bloody EWTD… ).

Unfortunately, social upheaval and anarchy comes into place when people stop using their brains and allow emotions to run high and start to think with their hearts or dicks. Human beings are meant to have been blessed by the Almighty with the capacity to reason, but all you see these days are how increasingly segregated we are as a society – from the fractured geography that almost defines the middle east to the ethnic war in Kenya to the increasingly fragile racial balance back home.

How do you justify burning your neighbour’s house down or raping his wife because they are of different colour or speak a different dialect and hence the cause of ‘all our problems’. Funny thing is, a lot of the individuals on the extreme right tend to believe in the religious superiority of their ideals (whilst happily pocketing whatever worldly profit they might gain).

It would supremely ironic to see the diehard Republicans (who happily caused an increase in HIV transmission in Africa by deliberately withholding funds for AIDS agencies that promoted contraception) or Wahhabist (who wouldn’t allow their women medical care unless given permission by a male member of the family) writhing within the flames of hell but I should probably think about my own place first!

It’ll probably take a global famine or an alien invasion before we wake up as a species and realise that we’ve been digging our own graves and that Mother Nature is not one to fuck around with. And it’ll probably take a near extinction before we realise that the common folk is merely the play tools of individuals with vested interests, who are more than happy to sit back whilst they divide and conquer.

To call someone an ‘animal’ is usually perceived as an insult. But at least animals don’t destroy each other unless they have to.
